Travelling with Children in Egypt

Travelling with Children in Egypt

How Difficult is Travelling with Children in Egypt?

Most people discover an interest, or even a fascination, with Egypt as children. No one forgets the first time they heard the stories of the ancient pharaohs and their burial pyramids, and most children would eagerly join a cruise down the Nile.

How difficult is travelling with Children in Egypt? Not at all, in fact there are many opportunities for special or group tours that focus on family activities, with events easily managed by younger and older children alike. However, parents must consider a few things before planning a journey to Egypt along with their children.

A Few Things to Consider

One of the first items to consider are any health risks. Currently, Egypt requires vaccination against Yellow Fever from residents of several African and South American countries; additionally the country warns visitors about the risks of West Nile Virus, Malaria and recommends all visitors have immunizations against Typhoid and Polio.

If children are too young to safely or comfortably be immunized against disease, the family should postpone travel until everyone can be sure of effective health measures.

A second consideration about health concerns the child’s, or children’s, abilities to deal with the climate of Egypt. Travelling with children in Egypt will require long periods in the dry desert sun, in order to view and explore many of the ruins and archaeological sites, and anyone unable to handle the heat may find it difficult to enjoy a visit to a particular site.

Valid Passport Required

All children, regardless of their age will require a valid passport and a visa to enter the country. Depending upon their country of origin, most guests will do the appropriate paperwork on the plane as they approach Egypt, but it is a wise idea to check with the individual’s native country to determine the Egypt visa requirements for all visitors prior to departure.

Most major or larger hotels are happy to accommodate families, and finding a good location to stay should not present any difficulties. Dining, however, may present challenges for families with younger children since the exotic foods may not appeal to their palettes. While there are western fast food establishments, the real fun of a journey to Egypt is experiencing the culture, which includes the unique cuisine.

Again, families with very young children may want to delay their journey until the child is old enough to willingly eat a healthy diet while away from home and familiar foods.

Many Great Activities

There is much to see and do in Egypt, and in addition to the historical sights, there are many museums, outdoor activities and cultural events that children will deeply enjoy.

One activity that will make a lasting impression on a whole family is a visit to a local, busy marketplace. Here each member of the family will be able to find a memorable souvenir, and enjoy some of the healthy, safe and inexpensive street food that the “locals” eat every day.

Travelling with children in Egypt is very possible for an organized family. It presents a rare opportunity to take in some of the most remarkable sights and stories the world has to offer, and is a great way to introduce children to the other wonderful cultures of their world.
