Tour the Karnak Temple

The Karnak Temple has stood for over 4,000 years, inviting pilgrims and travelers to explore her ancient mysteries and commune with spirits of the past.

Temple of Karnak

The temple of Karnak was known as Ipet-isut (most select of places) by the ancient Egyptians. It is a city of temples built over 2000 years and dedicated to the Theben triad of Amun, Mut and Khonsu.

This derelict place is still capable of overshadowing many of the wonders of the modern world, and in its day must have been awe inspiring. For the largely uneducated ancient Egyptian population this could only have been the place of the gods. It is the mother of all religious buildings, the largest ever made, and a place of pilgrimage for nearly 4,000 years. Although, today's pilgrims are mainly tourists.

It covers about 200 acres - 1.5 km by 0.8 km. The area of the sacred enclosure of Amun alone is 61 acres, and would hold ten average-sized European cathedrals.

The Home of Amun

Karnak Temple is the home of the god Amun who was an insignificant local god until the 12th dynasty when Thebes became the capital of Egypt. He was represented in his original state as a goose and later as a ram, at the height of his power he was shown as a human with a head dress of feathers - all that remained of the goose.

In ancient times wars were not fought between countries but were considered as contests between gods. One deity subduing and replacing another, the victorious god and its people growing in strength. This is how Amun, with the help of Thutmose III and various other New Kingdom kings, rose to become the first supreme god of the known world and was hailed as God of gods.

Little is known of him, unlike most other gods he has no legends or miracles to impress his worshippers and seems to be closer to an abstract idea of a godhead. His followers came from all the strata of society and he was known to some as 'Vizier of the poor.'

The Sacred Lake

All ancient Egyptian temples had a sacred lake, Karnak's is the largest. It was used during festivals when images of the gods would sail across it on golden barges.

The water supply to the Sacred Lake, which symbolized the primeval ocean Nun, comes directly from the Nile. Next to the lake is a small café where you can pit stop in the shade and fantasize about the temple in its golden ages.

The Hypostyle Hall

The Hypostyle hall in the Karnak Temple, at 54,000 square feet, and with its 134 columns (the tallest of the 134 columns reaches a height of 23 meters) is still the largest room of any religious building in the world. In this enormous forest of columns you get a genuine feeling of the wealth of the New Kingdom and of the importance of Amun as the State-God.

Giza Pyramids Tours. Tour the Pyramids on the Giza Plateau in Cairo, Egypt

Cheops Pyramids, Giza Plateau, Cairo

The Giza Pyramids are the destination for most tourist. Giza Pyramids Tours allow you to not only see these incredible monuments, but to learn about them.

The Pyramids of Giza

The Pyramids of Giza consist of the most amazing and world-renowned features in all of Egypt. The sites you will see in Giza are so revered that that they are downright iconic of Egyptian culture. Giza is not actually a city but the western district of Cairo. Giza has also become increasingly popular as a commercial area, especially along Pyramids Road.

What to See?

What can you expect to see in Giza and on all the best tours of Cairo, Egypt? First and foremost, you have the Egyptian Pyramids. Any guided tours that are worth a penny will tour the Pyramids of Giza, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. It might surprise you to discover that the Egyptian Pyramids, while still in tact internally and externally, are surrounded by urban development. While visitors may come expecting to find the Pyramids in an isolated desert, what they will actually see is this natural attraction standing adjacent to businesses like McDonalds and Pizza Hut.

What can you expect of luxury tours that visit the Ancient Pyramids? Expect the insides of the Pyramids to be hot, humid and perhaps even a bit scary, especially if you have claustrophobia. Once you’re in though, you will be delighted by the miraculous achievement of these millennium-old creations - all the more impressive considering they were built by human hand.

Pyramids to look for by name include Khufu (at nearly five hundred feet high), Khafre and Menkaure.

The Sphinx

Besides the Pyramids, another popular feature on Giza Pyramids tours is the Sphinx and the Temple of the Sphinx. This human headed lion was originally built in honor of the sun god Re-Horakhty. Is your curiosity piqued by the Sphinx’s missing nose? No, the ancient Egyptians didn’t have a sense of humor. What is believed to be the cause of the missing nose is that bored soldiers once used the Sphinx as target practice. (The culprits have been suggested to be anyone from World War I British troops, to Napoleon’s army, to even Turks of the old era)

Please Note!

Can you climb the Pyramids? No, though at once time it was allowed. Unfortunately climbing these amazing structures is no longer allowed, though some claim that guards (in less frequented areas) can be bribed to allow some climbing activity.

Last but not least, expect to be offered a camel ride on these Giza Pyramids tours. We generally do NOT recommend a camel at the Giza Pyramids. If you should choose to go for a ride expect to haggle and expect to be cheated. Before and after the ride... Nevertheless, you have to sample Giza in order to say you have truly seen the grandeur of Ancient Egypt! In other words: Giza Pyramids tours are an absolute must when visiting Cairo.

Planning El Gouna Diving Vacations

Those who have arranged for El Gouna Diving Vacations will have access to a remarkable range of facilities and training to use in their Red Sea Riviera explorations.

Diving Vacations in El Gouna

It is not often that a traveler can find Egypt all inclusive vacations in towns or villages that were planned, designed and constructed strictly to meet the needs of visitors. Many of the country’s villages have flourished due to the interest of world travelers and tourists, but there is only one that was created specifically as a traveler’s destination, and that is the town of El Gouna.

The beautiful village is home to vacationers as well as homeowners who have chosen to live in an all inclusive village for most, or part, of the year. El Gouna diving vacations are the primary attraction for many of the town’s visitors, and the nine diving certification schools along with the comprehensive training facilities make it a great choice for beginner to expert divers.

More than Diving

Of course the planners of the town knew that El Gouna diving vacations would not be the only reason for travelers to come to the area, and to meet the needs of as many as possible, the resort location offers a variety of accommodations and dining packages. Those looking specifically for Egypt all inclusive vacations would be able to make such arrangements in El Gouna and will have access to the town’s more than 100 restaurants and bars as well as the many activities, facilities, amenities and services.

The Diving Destination

The waters of the Red Sea are the main attraction to El Gouna’s visitors however, and El Gouna diving vacations usually begin with some training in the heated pools and calm, private reefs just off shore. Visitors then move on to reefs and wrecks closest to the El Gouna coast, and all are provided with knowledgeable and experienced diving guides as well as comprehensive boat and support services.

The water sports in El Gouna don’t end with the diving and snorkeling however, and the town is known for its excellent deep sea fishing, parasailing, waterskiing, wakeboarding and kite surfing. Other outdoor and sporting activities include tennis, volleyball, horseback riding, desert safaris, and access to a range of fitness centers.

The area is also home to an 18-hole championship level golf course, several complete spas and many other services that add to the value of such Egypt all inclusive vacations.

The town has plans for expansion, and is all ready known as one of the world’s most environmentally friendly establishments. This means that El Gouna diving vacations are a great way to explore far more than the gorgeous waters off Egypt’s eastern coast.

Do You Know El Gouna?

If you are planning a trip to Egypt you have probably scheduled some time in Luxor, but with our specialized assistance you can be sure to see the most important and finest sites within the entire area. Learn more...

Scuba Diving in Al Quseir

Scuba Diving in Al Quseir

Diving in Al Quseir has become a popular activity for those who venture to this city in Egypt. In fact, so many people come for diving in Al Quseir that many of the hotels, which are located on the beach and along the sea, offer their own diving centers.

High Standards for Marine Conservation

The popularity of diving in Al Quseir comes for the beautiful coral reefs. To protect the reefs, many hotels and diving centers take the time to follow various ecological measures to preserve each nature reserve and set high standards for marine conservation. In addition to diving, snorkeling is also an option with many reefs that are accessible right from the beach.

Although Al Quseir has become a common destination for those who love diving, the city has actually restricted the number of divers at any given time, which helps to reduce the amount of stress on the underwater environment.

Furthermore, many of the hotels that offer diving in Al Quseir are also assisting the city in keeping visitors and establishments friendly to the environment by training staff members to think environmentally as they work or lead a tour.

Scuba Diving Equipment

If you plan on diving in Al Quseir, you need not worry about bringing your own diving equipment. Equipment, including full gear, is available for rental from many of the different diving centers located along the beach.

You can also trust the Egyptian crew to help you every step of the way as you prepare for your jump, take your first dive, and finish up a day in an underwater paradise full of coral and a wealth of fish. In addition to the intact reef area in the bay, divers can also make their way to the outer areas of the reef, all of which can include guided and unguided trips.

Scuba Diving Certification

For those who have yet to take an open water course or prepare for their first dive, the opportunity for diving in Al Quseir also includes a number of different courses and instructional opportunities. While you do have to pay for these courses, they are not much more expensive than those you would take at home and they offer an experience that you cannot gain in a pool or other diving establishment.

All of this is just a few of the reasons why scuba diving in Al Quseir is the opportunity of a lifetime. During your trip to the Egyptian shoreline, make a dive one of the activities that you cannot miss.

Planning a Red Sea Diving Excursion

Many visitors to Egypt’s Red Sea coast and Sinai Peninsula take in a few days of snorkeling and scuba diving. Our expert services can help plan for the most customized Red Sea excursion possible.

The Most Popular Dive Sites

The following is a sampling of some of the most popular dive sites in the area. Getting together with one of the local dive tour operators will reveal even more great places for diving in Dahab.

The Lighthouse

The Lighthouse is a dive site that gets its name from the actual lighthouse that sits on shore not far from the site. It is a wall dive, where you will see a variety of fish and coral.

The Southern Oasis

The Southern Oasis dive area gets its name from the gorgeous palm trees on the shore neat the site. You can find a sandy reef, plenty of beautiful coral, and a host of other surprises while exploring all that this site has to offer.

The Eel Garden

The Eel Garden is another site that has many great things to offer the adventure-loving diver. You can see a great many eels on the sandy sea floor, as well as the wreck of the South African ship called the Yolanda. This ship sank more than twenty years ago and offers another exciting place for divers to examine.

Another nearby wreck is that of the Dunraven, a British ship that sank in 1876 during a trip from Bombay to Newcastle.

You can likely also find a dive operator that will take you to one of the most popular wrecks in the Red Sea, the S.S. Thistlegorm.

The Canyon

One of the most popular sites for those diving in Dahab is called The Canyon. This site is located several miles north of Assalah, and can be reached by passing through a coral lagoon and then bear left as you reach the open sea. There you will come across The Canyon and its steep walls.

You can find a number of different types of marine life here as well as a place called the "Fish Tank," which is a coral area filled with small fish. Many of the tour operators on the island will be able to take you out to the canyon.

The Blue Hole

The Blue Hole is an infamous dive site, and one that is as dangerous as it is beautiful. Those people who have the proper training and experience should only attempt the Blue Hole with qualified guides.

With all of the wonderful places for scuba diving in Dahab, it is no wonder that it is such a hot spot for divers.

Diving in Sharm El Sheikh

Scuba Diving in Sharm El Sheikh

Diving in Sharm El Sheikh is a scuba diver's dream come true. Coral reefs and warm, clear waters invite you to take a plunge and see what's beneath the surface!

Some Divers Visit Sharm on an annual basis

Known throughout the world as a full service diver’s destination, the waters surrounding Sharm El Sheikh along the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt continue to be visited by more and more divers on an annual basis. The entire area is now known as the Red Sea Riviera for its many high quality resorts and remarkable natural beauty.

Marine Life Extravaganza

The warm waters of the Red Sea are home to a diverse number of sea creatures. From Ras Mohammed, known as the one of the top sites in the world due to the meeting of the Gulfs of Suez and Aqaba and the unique ecosystem that has created, to the Jackson Reef at the northern limit of the peninsula – with its sharks, turtles and groups of banner, puffer and trigger fish, divers of all skill levels are sure to be satisfied.

Currently most visitors planning on participating in diving in Sharm El Sheikh or water related events look to several different neighborhoods in the city for their diving charters and their accommodations. The most popular include Na’ama Bay, which offers the largest assortment of dive centers in the area and Shark’s Bay which is a bit of an upscale area and is home to the original diving outfits and schools.

Most divers spend their time in the Ras Mohammed National Park, which means any collecting or disturbing of the wildlife is strictly prohibited, which also insures that the many more diving tourists who will come to enjoy the waters will be able to see the remarkable wildlife in its completely normal and natural state.

A Diving and Tourism Hotspot

Sharm el Sheikh is among the best destinations for diving holidays Egypt has to offer and if you plan a trip to the resort in the Sinai peninsula, you should make sure that you visit the following dive sites.

Jackson Reef

If you are hoping to spot something big on your diving holiday, Egypt could be the place to go - and Jackson Reef gives you a good chance as it is renowned for the strong currents that pass by the reef.

You may be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of hammerhead sharks, large schools of barracudas or even a tiger shark during a dive here.

Keep your eyes on the blue during your dive - but don't neglect the reef which is teeming with life due to the strong currents that provide nutrients for a vast array of corals, fish and other marine creatures.

The Thistlegorm

The wreck of the Thistlegorm is one of the biggest draws for diving holidays Egypt has - and with good reason.

This Merchant Navy vessel was sunk in 1941 during the Second World War and divers will discover much of its cargo of motorcycles, trucks and wellington boots is still in its hold.

Jacques Cousteau found the wreck in the 1950s and since then it has regularly been named among the top ten wreck dives in the world.

As well as its cargo, the anti-aircraft gun and its massive propeller are worth seeing during your dive on the wreck.

The top of this wreck begins at around 12m, with a maximum depth of around 30m, which makes it easily accessible to most recreational divers with some experience.

Shark Reef to the Yolanda

Another wreck of sorts within easy reach of Sharm el Shekih is the Yolanda. This cargo ship sank to the bottom of the reef wall, shedding one of its cargo containers on to a plateau as it went.

Divers regularly do a drift dive along Shark Reef to this point, where toilets and a bath that were being carried by the Yolanda can be seen dotting the seabed.

Our Egypt travel packages are private and fully customizable. We can easily add a couple of days or more of diving in Sharm El Sheikh to your Egypt tour itinerary.

Pharaoh: Lord of the Two Lands

The most powerful person in ancient Egypt was the pharaoh. The pharaoh was the political and religious leader of the Egyptian people, holding the titles: 'Lord of the Two Lands' and 'High Priest of Every Temple'. As 'Lord of the Two Lands' the pharaoh was the ruler of Upper and Lower Egypt. He owned all of the land, made laws, collected taxes, and defended Egypt against foreigners.
As 'High Priest of Every Temple', the pharaoh represented the gods on Earth. He performed rituals and built temples to honour the gods.
Ramesses II Many pharaohs went to war when their land was threatened or when they wanted to control foreign lands. If the pharaoh won the battle, the conquered people had to recognise the Egyptian pharaoh as their ruler and offer him the finest and most valuable goods from their land.
