Senior Travelers in Egypt

Senior Travelers in Egypt

For many, an Egyptian vacation is a once in a lifetime experience and is often not taken until later in life. Senior travelers in Egypt will find this information useful.

Can Senior Travelers Tour Egypt?

There are many destinations that a majority of people would like to visit at some point in their lives - the Grand Canyon, the islands of Hawaii, Paris, and Egypt are all popular names on most lists. For senior citizens the list generally remains the same, and each year sees thousands of senior travelers in Egypt.

Is it more difficult for senior travelers in Egypt, than younger visitors? Not really. While there may be some motility issues that older visitors will have to deal with, a well-planned itinerary can really help avoid most difficulties for any guest of this fascinating nation.

Health Concerns

There are, however, health concerns that all visitors to the country must address. For example, senior travelers in Egypt will want to bring “back up” medications, in case of any mishaps with their day to day prescriptions. Additionally, some immunizations are suggested for travelers, and some African and South American guests are required to present proof of Yellow Fever immunization.

Vaccinations

Currently Egypt recommends that everyone entering the country have both polio and typhoid vaccinations. All travelers should be aware of West Nile Virus, and avoid swimming in the fresh waters of lakes, rivers or streams due to certain native parasites and bacteria. A small measure of common sense will go a long way in protecting senior travelers in Egypt from some of the most common “complaints” or health issues.

Bottled Water Only!

This also includes drinking only bottled water, and not any tap water. Eating at sanitary restaurants or snack bars in the markets is the best plan, and forgoing alcoholic beverages in the heat of the Egyptian climate is a good idea as well. Some visitors try a nice cup of cold Hibiscus tea, “karkade”, a popular beverage with many Egyptians, but tourists with blood pressure issues should note that it can dramatically lower the blood pressure of the drinker and avoid consuming it.

Apart from paying attention to health concerns, senior travelers in Egypt can enjoy all of the wonderful experiences that bring so many others to the country year after year. While group tours make for easy travel, and can provide excellent sources of information through officially trained guides, individuals will find travel just as satisfying.

Hire the Services of a Local Guide

It is a good idea for independent senior travelers in Egypt to hire the services of a local guide – most of who are trained by the government. This is a good way to avoid any difficulties in reaching the most popular sights, to have the services of a translator at restaurants and in the markets and to provide a much richer overall experience. Hotels are usually able to help their guests arrange for a licensed guide service.

Exchange Some Funds

Finally, travelers are encouraged to exchange some funds into the local Egyptian currency to use in “baksheesh” (tipping) and to purchase food and merchandise in the markets. Other than that, most travelers will find their credit cards or travelers checks (in American dollars, Euro and English pounds) accepted almost everywhere else.
